Chicken Sandwiches and the Library Card of Elvis Presley: Summer Reading 2025 Week 2

Happy summer Do Art Nation!  We hope you are having a season of adventure and creativity, because WE SURE ARE!  I’ve been having an absolutely amazing time witnessing the art, the energy, the enthusiasm from kids, parents, and educators alike.

Week 2 started out in Iowa at a Paint a Drum workshop with Jerry’s mom Karen.  Then over to Forsyth Illinois for a creative assembly, then south to Tupelo, Mississippi.  After a few long days on the road I was looking forward to making some more food, and doing a twist on the chicken sandwiches I’d made the week before.  This time, I used boneless chicken thighs, peppers, onions, jalapeno pepper, and paprika, chopping the whole thing together before layering it on seed break with spinach and avocado.  The mixture was delicious–even if the sandwiches came out a bit mushy.  The next day would be my biggest day of the summer so far–TWO creative assemblies in one day, about an hour apart in Tupelo and then Fulton just down the highway.

I’d been looking forward to seeing Tupelo Mississippi, famous as the birthplace of Elvis Presley, but it would be a too-short stay before I was on the road again–not much time for sightseeing.  But when I arrived at the library there was a surprise waiting for me: Elvis’ childhood library card!  A few pictures surrounded it, as well as a short paragraph explaining that Elvis loved to read comics as a kid.  I set up my banner right in front of the display case.  The assembly was the best so far.  The energy from the kids was electric, and the drawings were amazing.  Whether the spirit of the King helped the whole thing run smoothly, is not for me to say.

It’s been amazing to see your drawings and creativity, Do Art Nation.  Make sure to check out our full list of events and come see us!  And let us know: what have you been drawing?  How have your art projects been going?  We’re endlessly inspired by the creative energy you work so hard to put out in the world, and we can’t wait to show you what’s next!
