Hello to everyone out there in the Do Art Nation! We hope fall is off to a great start for you, as we continue to bring art and creativity to people all over the country. Mr. Jerry and Ms. Karen are on their way back as we speak, after workshops in Colorado and Wyoming.
As I’ve said before, one of the ways that I love to use creativity, to not only make art but also to connect with others, is to make art and give it to other people as presents! I recently got a chance to do this by making a picture of the Pokémon Totodile for the son of one of my friends. He just turned eight this year, and because he’s a big fan of Pokémon and Pokémon cards, I decided to make him a picture of one.
I was inspired by a Pokémon card by the Japanese artist Ayako Ozaki, featuring Totodile splashing around in a traditional Japanese garden. Usually when drawing or painting something, I like to do two preliminary sketches, one on the whiteboard and one on pencil and paper. Working on a whiteboard allows you to make something bigger, which allows you to play around with some of the shapes and features. I drew, the final drawing on cardstock, painted over it, and then inked the lines to give it a finished look.
