Making Art for Others: A Birthday Present from Aunt Sue

Hello Do Art Nation!  We hope you’re having a great December and that your art projects are going swimmingly.

For December this year we’ve been talking about making art for others as part of our DO ART CHALLENGE.  December is a big time for gift-giving, but you can give art to people at ANY time of year, to show them that you care and make them feel special.

A picture from Jerry's Aunt Sue to Chet for his birthday

One of my most prized possessions is a painting I got for my birthday from Jerry’s aunt Sue!  Sue made her first painting when she turned 50 a few years ago, and it’s been amazing to see her evolve into an artist with her own unique vision.  One year for my birthday, she gave me the painting pictures above.  Sue took the year I was born–1989–as an inspiration, and gave the canvas comic book-like panels with all the different milestones from that year.  She included such events as the Batman movie premier, the debut of the Simpsons, the birth the World Wide Web, and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

It still hangs over my desk, inspiring me as I make comics and continue to bring art and workshops to kids and audiences all over the country.  Every time I see it I’m reminded not only that someone cared enough to make this amazing painting for me.  I remember just what time, dedication, and creativity can do!  Whenever in life we begin our artistic journey, I guarantee that inspiration and surprises wait in store for all of us!

What work of art have you gotten on your birthday?  Reach out to us and let us know.  And remember to KEEP CREATING Do Art Nation, and don’t be afraid to share the results with others.  You never know who you may inspire next!
