Hello to everyone out there in the Do Art Nation!
It’s been an amazing summer of art and fun. After a weekend of much needed rest I’m excited to get back into the flow, back to my own art projects and the wonderful things that I see you all create!
I like to tell kids that creativity is a superpower. This means not only IMAGINATION, the ability to visualize or produce ideas with your brain, but also the power to BRING THOSE IDEAS TO LIFE through action and persistence.

Lots of times, kids will sit down and not know what to draw. They won’t know what comic to make. So I tell them: start by making 3 panels at the top of the page. Don’t worry about what you’re going to make yet, just start doing art and something will come to you! As you do, let go of any preconceived notions about what you should create–superheroes, deep musings on life or something you think someone else will like. Just start drawing and see what you come up with next!
Still stumped? Look around you. We have some WACKY banners that may spark inspiration. Or maybe there’s something else in the room, an object in the corner or a cartoon on someone’s shirt. Try to draw something that catches your eye, and see what story it tells you.
I’ve seen some amazing art from you all, Do Art Nation. And I can’t wait to see what you create next! We’ve got workshops at libraries and park districts all through the month of August, and into September as the school year begins in earnest. Come by and see us, and show us what your IMAGINATION and CREATIVITY can do!
